Annick Goutal, an unconventional visionary who transitioned from a prize-winning pianist and model to a perfumer, crafted this scent alongside master perfumers Francis Camail and Henri Sorsana. Inspired by her summer vacations in Tuscany and Marguerite Yourcenar’s novel *Memoirs of Hadrian*, she sought to capture the vivid memories of the Italian sun and shaded terraces. At a time when heavy oriental perfumes dominated the market, Eau d'Hadrien was a revolutionary breath of fresh air that enchanted French President François Mitterrand and numerous Hollywood stars alike.
The Olfactory Composition
The fragrance is built on a rapidly decaying pyramid that opens with an incredibly zesty, dry explosion of Sicilian lemon, citron, grapefruit, and Italian bergamot. This sparkling tartness feels like standing under a bright blue sky surrounded by citrus orchards.
