Imagination by Louis Vuitton is an eau de parfum that brings bright citrus together with the calm bitterness of black tea. Released in 2021 as the seventh fragrance in the men's collection, it opens with freshness and leaves a soft amber impression on skin. Here, amber suggests warmth and softness. The perfumer and the story behind the fragrance

Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud grew up in Grasse, a town in southern France known for perfumery. His father and grandfather were perfumers, and conversations about flower harvests and materials were part of family life. He recalls his mother putting rose water on his face in the morning and visiting jasmine fields with his father.

His work includes L'Eau d'Issey for Issey Miyake and Bvlgari Pour Homme Eau de Toilette. Appointed Louis Vuitton's in-house perfumer in 2012, he continues to create at the atelier in Grasse.

Imagination took five years to realise. Cavallier-Belletrud describes having a scent in his mind before he could turn it into a formula. One day, writing a formula on his computer, he felt he had found a way forward. He was seeking a light amber effect without relying on weight or sugary sweetness.

His father once told him that one day he would even smell the water he drank. He says that has now happened. His attention to scent extends beyond flowers and perfume into an ordinary glass of water.

Louis Vuitton presents Imagination as a men's fragrance, but Cavallier did not begin by deciding on a gender. Women also asked what he was wearing when he tested it. Anyone who likes the fragrance can enjoy it. The name was also chosen because it has the same spelling in English and French.

A closer look at the scent

Citron, a citrus fruit resembling a large lemon, provides a clue to the opening: brightness with a peel-like bitterness. Bergamot adds freshness, while orange brings a rounder fruit impression. The citrus combination has both sharp and soft sides.

Neroli is the scent of orange blossom, bringing a floral brightness distinct from the fruit. Ginger contributes a crisp, nose-tingling edge, while cinnamon brings a restrained warmth. Flowers and spices do different jobs within the freshness, helping it hold interest as the citrus continues.

Black tea contributes a bittersweet leaf impression with a lightly smoky character. The woody scent of guaiac wood and the resinous scent of olibanum support that depth. Olibanum is also used as incense; the woods and resin bring a quieter setting around the tea.

Ambroxan is an aroma material with an ambergris-like smell. In Imagination, it creates a soft finish that settles close to the feel of skin. The tea's bitterness shares that finish with gentle amber warmth, adding comfort beyond the initial freshness.

Comparisons and positioning

L'Immensité by Louis Vuitton is a useful comparison because it also combines citrus, ginger and soft amber. Grapefruit bitterness and the crisp freshness of ginger are clear reference points. Its sharpness may appeal on days when you want citrus peel and ginger to stand out.

In Imagination, the tea-leaf bitterness and quieter finish are also worth noticing. Even within the same house's fresh fragrances, the aspect you find most pleasing can lead to a different choice.

Wūlóng Chá by Nishane also combines citrus and tea. Oolong tea sits at its centre, supported by musk and fig. Against Imagination's black tea and amber, it offers oolong with fruit and musk. Comparing both the tea and its surrounding materials makes the distinction easier to follow.

Bvlgari Pour Homme Eau de Toilette is another tea-and-musk fragrance by the same perfumer, Jacques Cavallier.
