About Diptyque

Diptyque began in Paris as a shop where three artist friends placed their own fabrics beside objects collected through travel. Scent was never isolated as a remote luxury; it moved among drawing, interiors, story, and the gestures of daily life.

History

Painter Desmond Knox-Leet, stage designer Yves Coueslant, and Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, trained in architecture and design, opened at number 34 on Boulevard Saint-Germain in 1961. In 1963 they transformed the scented candle from a primarily practical object into a decorative and sensory one. The first eau de toilette followed in 1968. Oval labels, dancing typography, and the shop's juxtaposition of objects from different cultures became part of the perfume identity rather than remaining separate graphic decoration.

Philosophy & Signature Style

Nature is not pinned down like a botanical specimen. Plants, humidity, paper, woods, and interior light encountered through travel are reconstructed together with the instability of memory. Knox-Leet's habit of mixing raw materials as a painter prepares a palette remains a useful model across collaborations with different perfumers. Realistic observation and invention, polish and hand-drawn intimacy, are allowed to coexist. Visual design and smell respond to one another like the two panels of a diptych, leaving room for the person wearing or lighting the fragrance to complete the scene.

Iconic Fragrances

  • *Philosykos* — Leaf, fruit, sap, and wood evoke the whole fig tree in dry light.
  • *L'Ombre dans L'Eau* — Blackcurrant leaf and rose become waterside greenery and shadow.
  • *Tam Dao* — Sandalwood carries the memory of temple timber and distant travel.
