14 Juillet
A “fireworks” accord with tangerine and blackcurrant opens onto labdanum and cinnamon, then settles into the warmth of Madagascar vanilla.
Perfumer: Meabh McCurtin
Named for 14 July, France's national holiday, this scent is the brand's way of bottling fireworks and the joy of a moment shared with others. Rather than tying itself to one date or one place, it reaches for a French sense of celebration that runs from Paris streets to country villages, imagined as something to wear on an ordinary day.
The top pairs a “fireworks” accord with the juicy brightness of tangerine and the tart, berried note of blackcurrant. The accord is a composed effect rather than a single raw material. In the heart, labdanum brings a resinous warmth, violet leaf a cool green edge and cinnamon a dry, spiced sweetness, moving the scent from bright citrus toward something more shaded. The base centres on Madagascar vanilla, rounded by the soft balsam of benzoin and the toasted sweetness of tonka bean. The vanilla is described as Fair For Life certified, and the brand files the fragrance under smoky amber.
The perfumer, Meabh McCurtin, sums it up in three words: fiery, joyful and addictive. Bastille says 95% of the formula is natural in origin, and that it is vegan and made in France.
Because the brand proposes it for any season, it suits a day when you want a lift of citrus just as well as a cold evening that calls for vanilla warmth. Try it before an evening gathering, when the fizz of the opening can give way to a sweeter, settled finish.
