Stephen Nilsen
A chemical engineering PhD turned perfumer, balancing detail and harmony across fragrance styles.
About Stephen Nilsen
Stephen Nilsen is a perfumer who came to fragrance by way of science, holding a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and an earlier career in flavors. His path joins a researcher's rigor with an ambition he carried since his teens.
Career
As a teenager, Nilsen read a National Geographic article about perfumers and knew at once what he wanted to do. He first pursued science, earning his doctorate and building an established career in flavor creation. He later changed course to follow that early dream, beginning his perfumery training in New York City.
Creative Style & Philosophy
His style is polished and attentive to detail and harmony, ranging from instantly appealing gourmands to opulent white florals. "Perfume makes a statement about its wearer, and this has always fascinated me," he has said, and he names the sharing — helping translate someone's vision and seeing people enjoy the result — as what makes the work special to him. He thinks of scent as a visceral cue that can recall memories or create new experiences, an outlook that mixes play with intelligence.
