Sari
A Japanese perfumer connecting botanical scents, music and memory through Kahori to Tomoni.
About Sari
Sari is a Japanese perfumer and the founder of Kahori to Tomoni. Her practice brings botanical materials into contact with memory, music and the changing seasons. Alongside perfumes and product scents, she works with installations, spatial fragrance and experiences that invite people to listen through smell.
Career
Her background includes music and composition. A flower encountered during a tree-planting trip to Indonesia awakened a family memory and drew her toward plants and fragrance. She went on to study scent and explore natural materials directly, including extracting essences herself. In 2011 she received the Environment Minister’s Award in a fragrance competition. Her work also connects Japanese incense culture with Western approaches to scent.
Creative Style and Philosophy
Sari understands fragrance through relationships resembling chords and rhythm. She leaves room for plants and the wearer’s skin to influence the final experience, rather than treating a composition as something completely fixed. Musical collaborations give this approach another form: an emotional movement or changing atmosphere can become a sequence of flowers, woods and resins.
Signature Works
- *Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 for La Nuit parfum*: an iris-centered composition with flowers and a poised finish, interpreting homesickness and a movement toward the future.
- *Amai Konran for La Nuit parfum*: a collaboration with musician Naruyoshi Kikuchi, built around cacao and lotus as an interpretation of night.
