About Roberta Ion
Roberta Ion grew up in Romania and works in London as a perfumer at Floris. Alongside bespoke fragrance creation, she teaches perfumery at London College of Fashion. Her work brings scientific study into contact with images, music and personal experience.
Career
She studied cosmetic science and explored the relationship between fine fragrance and music in her master's research. Projects for fashion accessories and live musical performance gave her ways to work with scent outside a conventional perfume bottle. She also worked on the technical side of the fragrance industry, including compliance with fragrance standards and international regulations, before moving into bespoke perfumery and returning to her former college as a teacher.
Creative Style and Philosophy
When blending for an individual client, she gives that person her full attention. A fragrance may begin with a visual idea or develop like a musical composition, with materials harmonised across space and time. She is particularly interested in green notes and in bringing galbanum together with resins such as frankincense and myrrh.
Signature Works
- *Celest* — A Floris composition connecting English chamomile and balsamic warmth with light and ritual.
- *Smell the DJ* — A scent made for a Matthew Herbert musical performance in 2017, translating an audio brief into fragrance diffused during the live event.
