About Olivia Giacobetti
Olivia Giacobetti is a French perfumer who composes not only a material but also the air around it and the trace left after it disappears. Rather than reproduce a visible object at full volume, she places clues such as smoke, humidity, white light, or dry wood and leaves space for the smellers' memories to continue the scene.
Career
At nine, a film featuring a perfumer prompted her to imagine the profession; she entered fragrance work at sixteen. The following year she joined Robertet and spent about seven years learning materials and formulas as an assistant perfumer. In 1990, at twenty-four, she founded the independent company Iskia and created for many houses. Her own creative world, IUNX, began in 2003 and spans perfume, candles, and the scent of space.
Creative Style & Philosophy
Smell becomes a medium for recalling time and memory rather than a literal description of an object. A few lines establish the outline, while smoke, wood, peel, or sap leaves a slight roughness within transparency. Apparent quiet is never emptiness: the distance at which a material appears and recedes becomes part of the expression.
