Michael Pickthall was a British perfumer who founded Contemporary Perfumers Limited, now CPL Aromas, with his brother Terry in 1971. Michael's perfumery expertise and Terry's commercial direction established the foundation of an independent British fragrance house.
Career
The Pickthall family already had a history in fragrance when the brothers opened their first site in Essex. CPL's corporate history records an early partnership with Penhaligon's and credits Michael with several fragrances that became part of the British house's enduring catalogue. The arrangement also placed an independent British fragrance supplier in close creative contact with a historic London perfume house during CPL's formative decade.
Creative Style & Philosophy
His documented work gives lily of the valley, hyacinth, wet leaves, and spring flowers a lucid, structured presence. Rather than reproducing nature literally, he translated the atmosphere and seasonality of an English garden into clean, wearable green florals with a distinctly British restraint.
