Karine Chevallier treats perfume not as the result of one quick inspiration but as work that requires learning materials, listening to another person, and allowing trials to develop through time. Poetic ideas are not left as atmosphere; chemistry and exact formulation give them physical form.
Career
After studying chemistry, Chevallier entered ISIPCA in 1993 and graduated in 1995. The following year she became a junior perfumer at Haarmann & Reimer, learning materials and composition around Mark Buxton and other colleagues. She also studied luxury management and marketing, gaining experience from different positions in the industry before becoming independent and founding Olfactive Design in 2005. She now supports fashion, beauty, and independent perfume houses as an external creator.
Creative Style & Philosophy
Conversation with a client, material quality, chance within formulation, and the time of maturation are treated as equal creative elements. The quiet of iris or incense, dry woods, and soft florals or musk may be crossed by a slightly foreign line of green, smoke, or mineral effect, leaving a memory that is not overly resolved. Independence does not mean working in isolation; it is the freedom to translate several disciplines into olfactory structure.
