Juan Famenias Floris
The Menorcan founder of Floris, whose citrus and floral creations began a lasting family tradition.
About Juan Famenias Floris
Juan Famenias Floris came from Menorca to London and founded the Floris house. The shop he established with his wife Elizabeth became the beginning of a family tradition of fragrance making, connecting brighter citrus and flowers with memories of the Mediterranean.
Career
In 1730, the couple began selling perfumes, combs and shaving products in London’s St James’s district. Their premises at 89 Jermyn Street remained the centre of the business as later generations continued its work. Family formulas and records preserved an early approach to combining natural materials, carrying that inheritance into the house’s subsequent creations.
Creative Style & Philosophy
Limes reflects an everyday purpose: offering brighter fragrance during the oppressive heat of a London summer. Lemon and petitgrain connect with softer flowers and musk, making freshness a response to a particular place and season. His early work sits at the beginning of a broader family practice in which remembered landscapes, familiar experiences and the character of materials can become the starting points for perfume.
Signature Works
- *Limes*: Associated with his mid-eighteenth-century work, Limes joins brighter citrus with softer flowers and musk.
- *Night Scented Jasmine*: Floris attributes this floral heritage to its founder’s early creations. The contemporary fragrance surrounds jasmine and other flowers with greener character and warmer wood, continuing that earlier association through the house’s later perfumery.
