About Fabrice Olivieri
A French perfumer who heads his own creative studio, Parfumologie, formerly known as Trendslab. He resists being called simply a "nose," arguing that what he makes is as spiritual as it is physical.
Career
The son of a liqueur maker, he grew up among fruit syrups and once dreamed of becoming a gardener of medicinal plants; a master's degree in fashion and creation preceded his realisation that art, luxury, design and above all perfume were his real pull. Meeting Monique Schlienger proved a turning point, and during a long apprenticeship he studied raw materials and the construction of many great perfumes. He later worked daily alongside perfumers in the marketing department of Takasago, then refined his craft as a perfumer's assistant at IFF and with Christopher Sheldrake at Quest International, before opening his own studio in 2005.
Creative Style & Philosophy
Working instinctively, he transcribes a mood, an evocation or a memory into fragrant notes much as a painter or sculptor would. Calling himself a spiritual descendant of a Florentine herbalist monk, he is interested both in the botanical origins of an essence and in the associations it can awaken. Beyond estheticism and hedonism, he aims to give each creation "an extra touch of soul." In 2012 the French Ministry of Culture and Communication featured his work in the exhibition *Le Ministère est au parfum*, devoted to perfume creators and their know-how.
