About Desmond Knox-Leet
Desmond Knox-Leet was one of Diptyque’s three founders, a British-born French painter whose role also extended into fragrance creation. Ink drawing, lettering, travel sketches, and the texture of aromatic materials belonged to one sensory practice, giving the young maison a visual and olfactory identity that could not be separated into departments.
Career
Trained as a painter at the Beaux-Arts, Knox-Leet founded Diptyque in 1961 with interior architect Christiane Montadre-Gautrot and theatre administrator Yves Coueslant. Their shop at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain brought together fabrics, objects found on travels, and a new art of scented living. The trio introduced fragrance candles in 1963, and in 1968 Knox-Leet composed *L’Eau*, Diptyque’s first Eau de Toilette.
Creative Style & Philosophy
Diptyque describes him as composing fragrance in the way a painter prepares a palette, mixing materials for colour, proportion, and atmosphere. *L’Eau* freely reworked an old English pomander through cinnamon, clove, geranium, and other aromatics. In later projects, his contribution often took the form of an image or sensory direction developed with technically trained perfumers such as Serge Kalouguine, while his own ink work and typography made the bottle part of the same imaginative journey.
