About Christian Mathieu

Christian Mathieu (1946–2020) was a perfumer whose career included IFF, Roure Bertrand Dupont, and Takasago. He composed fragrances for Jacomo, Kenzo, Givenchy, and other houses. The Société Française des Parfumeurs remembered both his talent and his notably discreet character in its tribute.

Career

He began his career at IFF in Bois-Colombes, creating Jacomo pour Homme in 1980 and Coeur de Parfum in 1987. At Roure Bertrand Dupont, he composed Kenzo pour Homme in 1991. He later joined Takasago Paris, working on fragrances for Givenchy, Hugo Boss, Laura Biagiotti, and Jovan, among others.

Creative Style & Philosophy

His work connects the freshness of water with a woody foundation. Kenzo pour Homme combines an impression of sea spray with pine and sandalwood, suggesting a tree-lined coastal walk. This meeting of airy freshness and woods also provides a useful way to approach Insensé Ultramarine, another aquatic fragrance from his career.
