Barnabé Fillion is a French perfumer who thinks across photography, botany, music, and travel. Through synesthesia he experiences odor as color, sound, and texture, using scent to hold time and emotion that a photograph cannot capture.
Career
Fillion studied photography and worked as a photographer's assistant while extending his interests into botany, phytotherapy, and aromatherapy. Research for a thesis on synesthesia brought him to a perfumer who became his mentor for roughly four years; instead of a conventional school route, he trained through materials, memory, and practice. He has since collaborated across fashion, art, drinks, and fragrance, and founded his own research-led studio.
Creative Style & Philosophy
He begins less with a list of notes than with visual and tactile impressions: landscape light, the color of ground, vibration in sound, or bodily movement. Respect for the complex character of raw materials sits beside interest in new extraction methods and exchange with artists in other disciplines. Perfume, in his view, can become an extension of personality and a distinctive presence accompanying daily life.
