About Adilson Rato
Adilson Rato is a Brazilian perfumer who grew up in São Paulo. A childhood close to gardens introduced him to varied smells, while his later work with raw materials helped turn that curiosity into a profession. He is interested in the way a finished fragrance acquires meaning in the life of the person who wears it.
Career
Rato studied chemistry at night while working as an intern in the fragrance industry during the day. Tasks such as handling stock and cleaning up became opportunities to smell and learn materials. He began perfumery training at eighteen. A meeting with Maurice Roucel in New York was an important experience, and after returning to Brazil he continued pursuing his ambition at Firmenich. His route into the profession combined formal study with sustained practical contact with ingredients.
Creative Style & Philosophy
Rato values repeated refinement of a formula, returning to its details until the composition works as intended. He names bergamot among his preferred materials. His account of fragrance also places emphasis on emotion and memory: once worn, a perfume has a life beyond the perfumer's own intentions. The wearer brings a personal history and associations to the composition.
