About Veramoss

Veramoss is a synthetic fragrance ingredient supplied by IFF. Its chemical name is methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoate, and its CAS number is 4707-47-5. It is a defined aroma material rather than a botanical oakmoss extract, although its olfactory character makes it useful for representing part of a mossy impression.

Scent Profile

IFF describes oakmoss, gentle wood, phenolic and earthy facets. Raw-material supplier Ventós lists a crystalline solid ranging from white to pale yellow. That physical powder should be distinguished from the woodland image its aroma can suggest: it is not dried moss ground into a perfumery ingredient. The character combines a quieter woody softness with a deeper, earthy outline, rather than the brightness of fresh foliage.

Use in Perfumery

Veramoss can help connect flowers and herbs to a mossy foundation in chypre and fougère compositions. IFF places its impact in the heart and base. Depending on the surrounding formula, it can darken a floral impression or soften the transition between woods and other base materials. Supplier assessments of the ingredient’s substantivity describe a material under particular conditions; they do not establish the wear time or projection of a finished perfume. Its use should therefore be understood through the composition as a whole.
