About Valerian

Valerian is an aromatic plant whose roots and rhizomes supply essential oil. A common perfumery material is obtained by steam distilling the underground parts of Valeriana officinalis. The oil has a strong and distinctive character that is quite different from the delicate appearance of the plant in flower.

Scent Profile

Its scent combines earthy roots and warm woods with balsamic and musky depth. A greener, camphor-like freshness can appear at the opening, while the heavier root character becomes more apparent as the scent develops. The effect is dense and grounded rather than sweetly floral, and its animalic facets can be conspicuous even alongside other materials.

Use in Perfumery

Valerian oil can bring depth to woody and earthy compositions, helping to establish a warm, substantial base. In combination with patchouli, moss-like effects and woods, it supports impressions of roots and dry ground. Its character is strong enough that the surrounding ingredients and proportions have a considerable influence on the final impression.
