About Turpentine
Turpentine is a volatile oil derived chiefly from the resin of pine trees. The material obtained by distilling the resin is known as gum turpentine and has a recognisably pine-like smell. In perfume, it can express the sharp character of conifers and resin.
Scent Profile
Its pine character is pronounced, with a penetrating, volatile edge. Its principal constituents are alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, compounds associated with the smell of conifers. Rather than a sweet resin impression, it suggests green wood and the sharpness of an evaporating oil.
Use in Perfumery
Turpentine gives woody or herbal compositions a distinct coniferous accent. Alongside bitter citrus and the cool character of eucalyptus, it can bring a resinous sharpness to a fresh composition.
Did You Know?
Turpentine is known beyond the fragrance world for its use in thinning paints. Its character as a volatile oil derived from pine resin underlies both uses.
