What Is Tonalid?

Tonalid is a synthetic musk material also known as AHTN. As a polycyclic musk, it has long been used across fine fragrance and the scenting of everyday products.

Scent Profile

ÆTHER's official Japanese importer describes the material used in ULTRÆ as a sweet, woody musk. The effect is a soft, skin-close musk layered with the dry warmth of wood and a gentle sweetness, more rounded than sharp.

Use in Perfumery

In ULTRÆ, Tonalid sits alongside aldambre, rose oxide and Habanolide. Against the dry heat that aldambre brings, its sweet woody musk adds roundness, and together with Habanolide's musk it gives the drydown more body on the skin. Rose oxide's bright rose facet stays on top, while Tonalid works quietly underneath as the heat fades into a softer, warmer trail.
