About Spike Lavender

Spike lavender is the aromatic plant Lavandula latifolia, native to the Mediterranean region. Steam distillation of its flowers and leaves produces an essential oil. It is botanically distinct from true lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, and from lavandin, the hybrid connected with these two species. The distinction is also clear in the aroma.

Scent Profile

The oil combines a recognisable lavender quality with brisk camphoraceous freshness and a dry herbal or woody undertone. The presence of cineole and camphor contributes to this sharper impression. Compared with a softly floral lavender effect, spike lavender gives greater emphasis to a clear, penetrating freshness and less to rounded floral sweetness.

Use in Perfumery

Its aromatic character can work through the opening and heart of herbal and fougere compositions. Cedarwood, patchouli and oakmoss provide darker surroundings that support the fresh effect without losing the woody structure. It is also used in soap perfumes, where its strong aromatic clarity contributes to an immediately clean impression.

Did You Know?

Lavandin originated through hybridisation between true lavender and spike lavender. Oils sold under similar lavender names can consequently differ in the balance of flower, camphor and wood. Comparing them offers an accessible way to hear the distinctions within one familiar aromatic family, rather than treating every lavender material as interchangeable.
