About Rubber

Rubber is a fragrance note describing an impression associated with rubber materials. Natural rubber is principally obtained from the latex of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. A rubber note in a perfume does not mean that this material itself has been added as a fragrance ingredient. It may instead refer to an accord or to a perceptual effect near leathery notes.

Scent Profile

The impression can suggest the dark, elastic texture associated with new rubber goods. Resinous density, dry smoke and the fullness of leather may give it a harder, slightly industrial outline. The smell of processed rubber varies with the material and its treatment. A note name alone cannot identify a specific component, a manufacturing process or the exact means used to achieve the effect in a fragrance.

Use in Perfumery

In blending, a rubber-like impression can bring an unexpected shadow to soft flowers or bright citrus. Leather, myrrh, woods and incense can surround it with related dark textures. Within a floral composition it can provide contrast to sweetness and a more contemporary tactile character. Rubber is therefore also a word for how a perfume seems to feel, and its meaning is best understood within the overall composition.
