About Magnolan

Magnolan is a synthetic floral aroma ingredient developed by Symrise. It is not an essential oil extracted from magnolia flowers. The manufacturer classifies it as an acetal, records no occurrence in nature, and identifies the material with CAS number 27606-09-3.

Scent Profile

The floral character suggests magnolia, peony and lily of the valley, with a brighter grapefruit facet. This combination gives it both the rounded impression of a flower and a clearer citrus outline. In a white-floral composition, it can contribute a natural-seeming fullness without requiring a literal extract of the flowers its scent brings to mind. Its character is best understood through that meeting of floral body and fresh lift, rather than through the name of one botanical ingredient.

Use in Perfumery

Magnolan provides a connection between fresh citrus materials and more transparent floral elements. It also blends with dry woods, helping flowers sit within a wider woody composition. Symrise traces the original material to the 1950s and later developed Neomagnolan from its legacy by changing the balance of the relevant fragrance component. The newer material has its own identity and aromatic profile; the two names should not be used interchangeably when recording the ingredients a perfume house lists.
