Kuromoji

About Kuromoji

Kuromoji is a deciduous shrub in the laurel family, commonly identified as Lindera umbellata. It grows in Japanese woodland, and its aromatic leaves and small branches yield essential oil through steam distillation. Fresh branches, older wood and distilled oil can each present a different balance of the plant’s scent.

Scent Profile

The oil may combine soft floral facets with herbs, green leaves and citrus-like freshness, followed by a quieter balsamic woody character. Spicy nuances can also appear. Linalool contributes to its floral side, but the complete oil has a more complex character than that ingredient alone. Oils from different regions can vary in the prominence of their greener or warmer facets.

Use in Perfumery

In perfumery, kuromoji can bring brightness and gentle depth to woody or aromatic structures. Citrus and herbs emphasize its fresh plant character, while surrounding woods can extend the impression of a forest setting. Its role can move between the opening and the heart according to the character of the oil and the materials combined with it.

Kuromoji branches are also used for the small wooden utensils served with Japanese sweets at tea gatherings. The fragrant wood offers an everyday way to encounter the plant beyond its distilled oil.
