Aromatic
About Kunzea
Kunzea is an essential oil obtained from the leaves and branchlets of the shrub Kunzea ambigua. Production includes north-eastern Tasmania and Flinders Island, where freshly cut plant material is steam-distilled to obtain the aromatic oil. The name refers here to this aromatic material and its expression in perfumery.
Scent Profile
Its scent has a clean, fresh, eucalyptus-like character with a lightly medicinal impression. Spicy, woody and faintly sweet facets accompany that freshness. In a perfume, grassy and mint-like impressions can give the aromatic material a greener setting, connecting the scent of leaves with both softer and drier textures.
Use in Perfumery
Kunzea can be placed in the opening of an aromatic composition, alongside the sweetness of fig and cassis. Cardamom contributes spice, while clary sage adds a herbal character around the fruit and leaves. Orris brings a softer, powdery texture. Cedarwood, sandalwood and incense provide warmer woody and resinous expressions in the same composition. These combinations allow fresh leaves, sweet fruit, dry spice and woods to meet, with kunzea lending its distinctive aromatic freshness to the whole.
