About Green Peppercorn

Green peppercorns are the unripe fruits of Piper nigrum, the climbing plant that also supplies black and white pepper. Their colour and character reflect when the berries are picked and how they are preserved afterwards. Steam distillation of the unripe fruits produces a fragrant oil with a character distinct from the familiar black pepper material.

Scent Profile

The opening suggests freshly crushed green peppercorns: brisk, watery-green and spicy, with a faint salty impression. Compared with the warmer spicy character of black pepper, the green material has a brighter, crisper edge. As that initial peppery spark softens, lighter woody facets and a gently sweet, basil-like herbal character become easier to notice. The result combines freshness with a clear spice accent rather than a heavy, lingering warmth.

Use in Perfumery

Green peppercorn brings a fresh spicy accent to the opening of a composition, and can support green or herbal accords. It works alongside galbanum and elemi, as well as fresh spices such as cardamom or ginger. White floral compositions can also gain a lively spicy twist from its crisp character. The balance of those surrounding materials determines whether the green freshness or the peppery impression feels most prominent.
