About Geosmin

Geosmin is an odorant produced by microorganisms living in soil and water, including certain bacteria. It contributes to the familiar earthy smell associated with damp ground after rain. Perfumery also uses a synthetically produced material, rather than an extract made by collecting soil, to introduce that distinctive impression into a composition.

Scent Profile

Its character recalls wet earth, mossy ground and damp mineral surfaces. Compared with the drier grain of many woody smells, it suggests a landscape holding moisture, with a green, sometimes musty edge. The odour can be noticeable at very small concentrations, giving it an unusually clear identity even when it sits behind brighter or sweeter materials.

Use in Perfumery

Geosmin adds an earthy dimension to woody, green and floral compositions. With woods, it can suggest the ground beneath the trees; alongside leafy materials, it helps evoke the damp space below a canopy. It may support a rain-inspired atmosphere or become the central feature of a more conceptual composition. The effect depends on the surrounding materials and the amount used: a faint suggestion of earth and a strongly damp, musty impression are quite different expressions of the same distinctive smell.
