About Dust

Dust is a constructed fragrance accord used to suggest settled particles, aged fabric or the atmosphere of a room left unused. It is not the name of one botanical extract or a single universally defined perfumery molecule. Listing dust as a note does not mean that household dust is physically added to a perfume.

Scent Profile

The association can bring together dry wood, fabric-like softness and a fine powdery texture. In some compositions it meets cooler enclosed-space impressions or the mineral dampness of rain-touched stone. Those combinations are choices made for a particular fragrance. Dry settled dust and wet earth remain different subjects, and the name alone cannot establish the formula or the degree of dampness a finished perfume will have.

Use in Perfumery

Perfumers can use the idea to age a floral impression, give woods a sense of place, or create space around a close musk. Heretic uses an abandoned Hollywood soundstage as one setting, while Demeter describes the familiar smell of fine bits of household fabric and dirt. These are different creative approaches to a shared everyday association, rather than evidence of one standard commercial dust ingredient. Its effect can move from familiar and quiet to slightly unsettling according to the surrounding flowers, woods, minerals or musks.
