About Cascarilla

Cascarilla is a fragrance material obtained from the bark of the cascarilla tree, Croton eluteria. Steam distillation of the dried bark produces its essential oil. The material is associated with the Bahamas and other parts of the Caribbean, where the bark supplies a scent bringing together spice, warmer wood and aromatic greenery.

Scent Profile

**Warmer wood and a peppery spicy character** form its central expression. Nutmeg, black pepper and ginger provide useful comparisons, accompanied by fresher herbal facets and a gentler balsamic impression. Its effect reaches beyond a sharp spicy edge: the bark contributes a drier depth that can sit alongside the brighter aromatic aspects. Warming and fresher sensations can coexist within the same material, giving its spiciness several dimensions.

Use in Perfumery

Cascarilla can contribute to spicy compositions, mossy woody chypres and aromatic colognes. Nutmeg, pimento, sage and oakmoss offer complementary relationships with its woody and spicy facets. In a composition, the oil can work as an accent connecting materials, adding detail to warmer wood while bringing a more aromatic expression through the surrounding notes. That relationship between wood, spice and greenery makes it a useful material for shaping the texture of a fragrance.
