About Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea is a genus of South American climbing plants in the four-o'clock family. Its small, white tubular flowers are surrounded by brightly coloured bracts. In perfumery, the flowers provide the subject for a floral note within a composition.

Scent Profile

In a coastal fragrance setting, bougainvillea adds a floral expression beside fruit and salt impressions. Cassis, saffron and a salt-crystal note accompany it, creating a floral grouping with brighter fruit and spicy textures. The bouquet connects citrus and tropical fruit impressions with the warmer woods that follow.

Use in Perfumery

One approach places bougainvillea in the heart of a marine-fruity composition with davana and Sea Lily. A fresher seaweed impression can join the setting, while vetiver, sandalwood, amber woods and musk develop the base. These materials bring the floral theme into a composition evoking a beach at sunset.

Did You Know?

The pink, purple, red or orange parts surrounding the tiny flowers are bracts, rather than petals. The true flowers grow inside these brighter structures, giving the plant its distinctive appearance.
