About TORI NOTE
TORI NOTE is a fragrance brand founded in 2025 by Yoshitoyo in Kyoto. Its concept is a bird field guide written in scent, expressing the places and daily lives of familiar wild birds through eau de parfum.
History
The idea began with observing birds on neighbourhood walks during the pandemic. Following COTONOCA, which Yoshitoyo created in 2017, TORI NOTE arrived as a new perfume brand. A crowdfunding pre-sale ran from 28 February to 20 March 2025, followed by general release on 25 March. Development included visits to the birds' habitats, taking the atmosphere of those places as a starting point for scent.
Philosophy & Signature Style
The compositions draw on habitat, food and behaviour, rather than a bird's bodily smell. The word note connects observation records, fragrance notes and birdsong. Packaging opens like a notebook, revealing scientific names, illustrations and annotations styled as handwritten observations. The scent and its presentation together introduce a way of looking more closely at familiar birds.
Iconic Fragrances
The opening quartet follows Tsubame, a swallow flying at early-summer dusk; Suzume, a sparrow associated with floral nectar and sunbathing; Kawasemi, a kingfisher in a cool river valley; and Fukuro, an owl in a nocturnal shrine or temple woodland. Each bird's different way of life provides the starting point for its fragrance.
