About The Merchant of Venice
The Merchant of Venice is an Italian artistic fragrance house that brings Venice's perfumery heritage into contemporary scent. Its identity connects the maritime routes that carried aromatic materials, the city's culture of specialized craft, and the color of Venetian glass. Fragrance and bottle are therefore treated as parts of the same cultural narrative rather than as unrelated product and decoration.
History
The Vidal family, active in perfumery for more than a century, began developing a project linking its fragrance experience with Venice's cultural patrimony in 2011. In 2013, collaboration with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia helped open rooms devoted to Venetian perfumery at Palazzo Mocenigo. The commercial brand followed in 2014 with the first Murano Collection, while a flagship store opened in a seventeenth-century former pharmacy at Campo San Fantin.
Philosophy & Signature Style
The house takes the historic Mude—Venetian maritime trade routes reaching Asia, Africa, northern Europe, and many intermediate ports—as a central framework. Spices, incense, resins, flowers, woods, and citrus materials recall the exchange of goods and knowledge enabled by those routes. Contemporary perfumers translate that history into compositions with pronounced color, texture, and depth. Decorative vessels reference Venetian glassmaking, and the Murano Art Collection makes the relationship between perfume and glass craft especially explicit.
Iconic Fragrances
*Rosa Moceniga* focuses on a rose connected with Venetian perfume history, while *La Fenice* pays tribute to the city's celebrated opera house. *Arabesque*, *Byzantium Saffron*, and *Blue Tea* explore the broader vocabulary of trade routes and cultural exchange through different materials. Beyond selling fragrance, the house also supports the Perfume Museum at Palazzo Mocenigo and related exhibitions, making cultural interpretation and preservation an important part of the project alongside its collections.
