About Paul Smith
Paul Smith is a British design house grounded in tailoring but open to photography, music, travel, color, and the accidental details of daily life. Its fragrances carry the same instinct: familiar forms remain clear, then an unexpected material or vivid accent shifts the mood.
History
Paul Smith opened his first shop in Nottingham in 1970. The space measured only three by three metres and initially opened two days a week, a modest beginning that encouraged close attention to objects, customers, and presentation. He showed his first menswear collection in Paris in 1976 and gradually built a position between formal clothing and relaxed modern dress. The independent company later extended its point of view into accessories, interiors, and fragrance while keeping its founder active as designer, shopkeeper, and owner.
Philosophy & Signature Style
Positivity, curiosity, and creativity are the values the company states most clearly. Smith’s belief that inspiration can be found everywhere turns bicycles, photographs, flea-market discoveries, music, and travel into usable design material. This is why the familiar phrase “classic with a twist” suits the house without reducing it to novelty. In fragrance, the approach appears as readable structures enlivened by color, spice, woods, or a botanical detail, rather than as abstraction for its own sake.
Iconic Fragrances
Paul Smith Rose centers on a rose grown in the designer’s own garden and bearing his name, turning a personal horticultural reference into a clean floral signature. Earlier releases such as Paul Smith for Men established the fragrance line, while the Extreme pair used contrasting color and scent to express the brand’s lively treatment of wardrobe staples. Across these works, the most consistent idea is not a single note but a measured interruption of the expected.
