Balenciaga is a fashion house whose architectural approach to clothing has also shaped its way of presenting fragrance. Its perfume language is built around proportion, material, contrast, and the tension between an object preserved from the archive and an object made for the present.
History
Cristóbal Balenciaga founded the house in Spain in 1917 and established it in Paris twenty years later. His couture became known for technical perfection, sculptural volume, and an exact sense of proportion. The house entered fragrance in 1947 with Le Dix, named after 10 Avenue George V, the Paris address that contained its couture salon, ateliers, and perfume store. Le Dix connected the intimacy of scent with the discipline and silhouette of couture.
Philosophy & Signature Style
Balenciaga often presents beauty through structure, tension, and a deliberately modern edge rather than easy prettiness. Its contemporary identity combines archive gravity, technical materials, street language, and runway spectacle. In perfume, scent becomes an extension of clothing through surface, cut, volume, and distance. Iconic Fragrances
Important Balenciaga fragrances include Le Dix, Quadrille, Florabotanica, and Rosabotanica. In 2025, the house introduced a collection of ten perfumes after its archivists completed a fifteen-year search that recovered a forgotten 1947 Le Dix bottle. That object was scanned in detail and faithfully reinterpreted as a refillable flacon with a globular glass cap and hand-tied ribbon. The time-worn appearance of the box meets Balenciaga's industrial grey, making the packaging itself a conversation between past and present. The collection does not simply repeat Le Dix; it renews the house's fragrance archive with current materials and techniques.
