About Aesop
Aesop does not use botanical origin as an automatic guarantee of quality. Plant-derived and laboratory-tested synthetic ingredients are selected according to purpose. Formula, writing, store architecture, and service are brought into one cultural experience, turning an everyday object into an interval for attentive thought.
History
Established in Melbourne in 1987, Aesop developed products for skin, hair, and body. During the early 2000s, requests from customers who wanted the aromas of existing body products to last longer prompted work made for olfactory pleasure itself. In 2003, a small space on a former ramp into an underground car park became an early store and a point of departure for an architectural practice that reuses and interprets what a street already contains.
Philosophy & Signature Style
A new shop does not seek to occupy its surroundings with a loud standard facade. Local materials, makers, and earlier uses are read before something useful is added. Herbs, spices, woods, soil, florals, and sea air in scent retain dryness and bitterness. A name or literary prompt is not an answer that completely explains the formula; it opens a way for the wearer to consider place and emotion. Function and sensation, nature and science, are consistently held beyond a simple binary.
